Interactive Road Situation Analysis for Driver Assistance and Safety Warning Systems: Framework and Algorithms

This paper describes a fused sensor driver assistance system array for object detection and tracking and situation assessment named the Interactive Intelligent Driver-Assistance and Safety Warning (I2DASW) system. I2DASW combines image sensors, lidar, and radar, and promises for a wide range of applications in later stages of development, most notably in the fields of adaptive cruise control (ACC) and lane keeping systems. A threat analysis framework for various road safety situations is used to develop an algorithm alongside a study of driver behavior and vehicle dynamics. The system has three major functions as the authors outline: 1) to allow for safety warning and assistance systems, 2) to allow for in-vehicle safety protection devices for drivers and passengers, and 3) to provide appropriate just-in-time information regarding various immediacies regarding the car's positioning.
