The article reviews the confusing situation concerning the introduction of air bags as a safety feature on US cars. Current requirements state that passive restraint systems should be included from 1982 on full-size cars. The ruling will be mandatory for intermediate and compact cars from 1983 and for sub-compact and mini-size cars from 1984. The standard will require a reduction in loads on front seat occupants in frontal crashes using either passive belts or air bags which meet the criteria. The views are given of various organizations on the mandatory installation of air bags and their current state of development as an alternative to a passive seat belt system. /TRRL/
