Deterioration of Bridge Deck Roadway Members. Part II: Condition Evaluation
This study was conducted to determine the condition assessment procedures and performance characteristics of bridge deck surfacing, expansion joints, and safety barriers. A simple rating system with a scale of 7 to 1 is proposed to diagnose the condition of bridge deck members in service. This system was developed to allow a numerical comparison between components and to establish levels of tolerable deficiencies. A Markovian process is used for prediction of the deterioration process. Results from a simulation study using the real individual bridge components in City Vilnius, Lithuania are presented. Using the new rating system, about 31% of surfacing, 4% of expansions joints and 12% of safety barriers in the bridges of City Vilnius were classified as structurally deficient.
