SOME CONSIDERATIONS ON THE DESIGN OF BASES FOR PAVEMENTS

ENIGE OVERWEIGINGEN BIJ HET ONTWERPEN VAN FUNDERINGEN VOOR VERHARDINGSCONSTRUCTIES

In additon to technical factors economic aspects play a part in the choice of roadbase structures. In the Netherlands in the last few years bitumen bound bases have occupied an important place. At present there is growing interest in differently bound bases in consequence of the rising price of bitumen. The various types of roadbase can be classified as (1) rigid bound bases, (2) flexible bound based and (3) unbound bases. The choice between flexible and rigid bases is chiefly determined by the subsoil characteristics. The type of load on the pavement greatly influences the choice between bound and unbound bases. In the Netherlands as a rule sand is used for sub-base and subgrade courses. It has often to be stabilized with a binder. Within the scope of recycling materials the use of broken asphaltic concrete and refuse incineration clinker for roadbases is studied. For the design of a roadbase of the chosen type the materials properties and loading data must be known. Stresses and strains in the several courses are calculated with the aid of the elasticity theory of multilayer systems. Various graphical design methods are used, e.g. the asphalt institute method, shell design method and LCPC method. In the Netherlands a system of standard structures related to traffic class, traffic forecast, sub-soil condition and designed service life is being drafted. /TRRL/
