A Model Endeavor

Traffic microsimulation analysis tools can model real-world transportation networks on a systemwide scale that is difficult with more traditional methods. This article describes a public-private partnership that is working to improve traffic microsimulation technology. Under the Next Generation Simulation (NGSIM) program, the Federal Highway Administration is sponsoring fundamental traffic simulation research through the development of a core of driver behavior algorithms to help improve the capacity and accuracy of commercial microsimulation software. These algorithms represent the fundamental logic in traffic microsimulation models. The NGSIM team is composed of traffic simulation and modeling experts managed by a private company. The team is supported by senior advisers from respected transportation institutions across the country and includes 3 stakeholder groups: a traffic modelers group, a software developers group and a model users group. A freeway lane selection algorithm has already been developed by the team, and 3 additional driver behavior algorithms are in development. Supporting documentation and validation datasets will also be developed. NGSIM products will be well documented, openly distributed and free to the transportation community through a Web site.
