Motor Vehicle Event Data Recorders. Validation and Use of Data for Admission to the Court

Event data recorders (EDRs) store the data used to make the decision to deploy a vehicle's airbag as well as additional data useful in accident reconstruction. Data collected from EDRs is admissible as evidence in a court of law. This paper summarizes technical literature and testing related to EDRs in order to provide accident reconstructionists with the scientific basis verifying the accuracy of EDR data. This information can be used should the data's validity be challenged in court. Topic presented include: a review of current legal standards; an overview of EDR data; a summary of pre-crash data validations and limitations; a summary of validations of data concerning the change in speed during impact (delta-v); and a summary of limitations and anomalies associated with EDR data concerning delta-v.
