Tools for Assessing Safety Impact of Long-Range Transportation Plans

The evaluation and comparison of alternative long-range transportation plans should include the safety implications of respective plans. However, the commonly available tools/models for safety analysis, specifically crash prediction models, require detailed information that is not generated by travel forecasting models. Therefore, transportation planners need simplified crash prediction models based on variables for which long-range forecasts are available, and this paper examines the availability of such models. The difficulties of developing simple crash prediction models encountered by the authors and future directions for research are discussed.
