Super-cool car
This article describes the newly-developed Hydrogen 7 sedan car from German manufacturer BMW. The car looks the same as any other from the same vehicle class but features a cryogenic fuel tank between the back seat and the boot holding supercooled liquid hydrogen. The fuel injectors have been modified and steps have been taken to prevent embrittlement of engine components. The car can run on hydrogen or petrol and performance is similar. However, its range is limited to 125 miles and there are not many filling stations that can offer liquid hydrogen. Refuelling is a slow process and the tank takes up half the boot space. BMW is investigating more lightweight and flexible materials for the tank, and possible engine improvements of direct fuel injection or turbocharging. (A)
