Singing a new tune
This article describes the car engine adjustments available from UK company Superchips. Electronic engine control has made it more difficult for individuals to alter the tuning but the company adjusts the settings of engine control units to achieve the customer's desired result. Units are modified by remapping - monitoring through a dynamometer the effects of any changes. Fly-by-wire throttles can be altered to change the drive characteristics and turbocharged cars can have boost pressure adjusted. In the UK a high quality of fuel makes adjustments easier. Tuners have no need to comply with the vehicle engine emissions requirements which restrict the original manufacturers. (A)
