Diesel hybrid cuts carbon and saves fuel
This brief article describes a newly-developed ultra-low-carbon emission hybrid diesel powertrain that also delivers fuel economy improvements. The UK's Efficient-C research project was launched by the government in 2003 to demonstrate the feasibility of a family-sized ultra-low-carbon car. It has produced a full-hybrid diesel demonstrator vehicle, based on a fully-featured Citroen Berlingo Multispace family car, with 30 per cent improvement in fuel economy and carbon dioxide emissions. The same powertrain could be used in a five-door saloon car. Features include regenerative braking and full electric-vehicle operation at low speed. A battery management system monitors charge, cell temperature and voltage balance: a cooling circuit protects the electric motor and power electronics. (A)
