Fuelling competition

This article reports some developments in fuel cell technology. Fuel cells can help utility companies to balance network supply by responding to changes in output and demand. Australian manufacturer CFC (Ceramic Fuel Cells) recently reported success in field trials of its combined heat and power units and hopes to build a full-scale manufacturing plant in 2008 to supply fuel cells for integration into micro-generation appliances. US companies such as UltraCell, which make high-performance micro-cells for portable power, are being encouraged to develop fuel cell technology; Asian companies are exploring fuel cells for laptops; and in the UK the company CMR Fuel Cells is developing fuel-cell stacks for small power generation applications such as domestic heating boilers.
