Uni-link: learning from First principles
This article describes the development and operation of a university-based bus service in the city of Southampton, southern England. The previous university bus service, operated by First, was found to be unresponsive to customer demand, with poor driver training. A new operator, Minerva Accord, gained the contract and worked in partnership with Southampton University to provide a range of services suitable for the needs of both students and the general public, with a smart card scheme of ticketing and improved driver training. Buses have two doors for speed of boarding and alighting and a public address system to encourage communication from driver to passengers. The fleet comprises a range of vehicle types to suit passenger needs on different routes. (A)
