UKTram: four stages for credibility for LRT
The author, chairman of UKTram, outlines how the organisation is working to improve the image of light rail with the UK Government. UKTram's concentration on four major objectives is described: standards, peer reviews, legislative issues, and procurement and funding. Consultation with the industry led UKTram to schedule 13 activities during 2005: utilities, tram design standards, highway interface, noise and vibration, network rail interface, trackform design, project appraisal process, commercial structures, operational performance measurement, standard specifications, rail wheel interface and power and stray current. Progress with the protection and diversion of utilities is discussed with reference to a three-phase programme: data collection, guideline production and stakeholder acceptance. (A)
