Can two pedals cut costs?
Daf's entire Euro 4 LF range is available with a six-speed AS-Tronic gearbox. The company claim that the gearbox would improve fuel economy by 3%, with up to 10% savings in urban operations. The gearbox would also offer benefits as a clutch protection device. The AS-Tronic costs £1600. Daf expects the greatest take-up to be in the 7.5- and 18-tonne sectors. The truck will make urban driving easier for drivers and will also result in a safer working environment. The driver is able to keep both hands on the wheel and concentrate on other traffic rather than changing gear. There is a manual override facility. In a test drive, the author found that the transmission was difficult to confuse and that shifts were smooth and precise. (A)
