FROST GROUND PENETRATION TESTS IN SITU

The article is a brief summary of the research methods into the phenomenon of frost in the ground. The author gives his personal observations resulting from in situ conditions during the period of a number of winters, one of which is regarded as severe. These observations were made in the north-east of Poland. The summary contains a description of the research methods, the types of measuring apparatus used, and the nature of the ground and its water content at the observation stations. Prominence is given to analysing the frost index, which the author considered as being most important in forecasting frost penetration. The end of the article is devoted to conclusions arising from the observations taken. /Author/TRRL/
