Adaptation to climate change in the road management. Preliminary study

Vulnerability of roads and transport systems to climate change impacts depends on their level of response. Although a significant share of the impacts is already today taken into account in the design, a change in the impacts may cause a need to change road structures. In recent years, several exceptional weather incidents have occurred, like floods and storms, causing disadvantage and damage to the traffic and transport. A realistic insight in the need of structural improvement may be achieved, if these extreme incidents are studied to get information and data on the development and costs of damage. Application of investigation and design methods can be te sted in documented pilot projects. Adaptation and proactive measures again st climate impacts are, as follows: (a) Contingency planning (rescue opera tions),(b) Adaptation of road maintenance (friction control, snow removal, protection against flooding, erosion control),etc,(c) Control of design c riteria (wind, precipitation, flood levels) and improvement of current roa ds to assure the service level, (d) Improvements in the strength of roads (improvement of drainage, erosion control, raising the road surface levels), and(e) Warning and informing.
