Energy futures for Australian transport
This paper reviews oil supply and demand projections and concludes that while the world is largely proceeding in the absence of reliable data, the high dependence of transport on oil-based fuels is a major risk that requires management. The world is not running out of oil, but it is running out of cheap oil. Aviation is the mode most at risk, followed by road transport. Engineers Australia has been aware of the position for some time, and implementation of the recommendations of earlier work would at least buy a little time -although more is probably required now. There is a significant risk of a crisis arriving before any preventative action can take effect. (a)
