A COMPARISON OF DEFLEXIONS IN COMPOSITE BEAMS HAVING FULL AND PARTIAL SHEAR CONNECTION

Composite beams designed in accordance with cp 117 are described as having full shear connection, but in the forthcoming code to replace cp 117 beams with partial shear connection will be permitted. This paper shows that, with respect to the serviceability criterion of deflexion, the lower stiffness of beams having partial shear connection is sufficiently countered by the lower service loads so that the maximum span to depth ratios that apply to beams with full shear connection apply also to the comparable beams with partial shear connection. A linear analysis was used in the comparison but some allowance for non-linear effects was also made. /Author/TRRL/
