THE USE OF THE BIQUADRATIC PARABOLA FOR HORIZONTAL TRANSITION CURVES

L'IMPIEGO DELLA PARABOLA BIQUADRATICA NEI RACCORDI PLANIMETRICI STRADALI

In this article it is pointed out that the CNR standards on highway design prescribe only the use of the clothoid or the polycentric spiral for transition curves. An analytical review of these curves shows that none of the equations are perfectly adapted to a gradual variation of curvature at the internal loop or at tangential points with straight lines and circles. A biquadratic parabola is suggested as an alternative solution to horizontal transition curves. The equations are presented, the geometry is explained and illustrated, and an application example worked. A table of component values and factors for this type of curve is included. /TRRL/
