THE USE OF THERMO-PLASTIC MATERIALS IN THE MANUFACTURE OF TRAFFIC SIGNALS

L'IMPIEGO DI MATERIALI TERMO-PLASTICI NELLLA FABRICAZIONE DEI SAMAFORI

This article describes the physical and mechanical characteristics of makrolon, a polycarbonate plastic produced by Bayer, with special reference to its colour properties, durability and dimensional and thermal stability. This material has for some time been used for the manufacture of traffic signal components, notably lenses and in some cases the entire lantern assembly, in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Experience has shown these products to be in no way inferior in quality and efficiency to conventional signals, and to have certain advantages in respect of ease of maintenance (almost none required), light weight, perfect electric insulation (unaffected by humidity and ambient temperature), high impact resistance and good heat resistance. /TRRL/
