A review of lamp condition monitoring technologies

The monitoring techniques used for determining street lighting condition are considered. The traditional monitoring techniques involve measuring how long the lamp has been running using an hour meter or to monitor a parameter of the lamp such as the operating current. The limitations of these techniques are considered. An emerging approach to lamp monitoring is to measure a characteristic or combination of characteristics of a lamp to accurately determine the remaining life. Progress with this technique is discussed according to type of lamp: filament lamps, high intensity discharge (HID) lamps, fluorescent lamps, static induction discharge (SID) lamps, light emitting diode (LED) lamps. Lamp monitoring systems from Philips Lighting (Starsense and Telesensesystems), Integrated Equipment and Instrumentation, Mayrise Systems, Harvard Engineering (LeafNut system), Archnet Technology Ltd, and Fortran Traffic Systems Ltd (Naztec Lamp Monitoring System) are described.(A)
