A healthy dose of spit and polish
This article describes the measures taken by UK bus operators to ensure the cleanliness of their vehicles. Halton Borough Transport operates 60 buses out of a single depot and its cleaners are employees rather than subcontractors. The cleaners clean and refuel the buses, remove graffiti and aid depot security as they work outside normal working hours. School buses are monitored by CCTV. The 220 buses operated by Stagecoach Cambridge and Peterborough are swept out and mopped daily and get a thorough clean every 3 weeks. Stagecoach East is looking at subcontracting bus cleaning. The measures taken to combat graffiti, chewing gum, needles and rubbish are outlined. There are several major cleaning contractors specialising in buses, including Interclean Bus Services and Tara Support Services. For the outside of vehicles, Stagecoach has invested in new washes in both Peterborough and Cambridge, complete with recycling equipment. Vehicle cleaning specialist JJ Arnold can provide a partial or full water reclamation system, drive-through and roll-over cleaning machines. WashTec is another supplier to the commercial wash sector, with its MaxiWash system. (A)
