Window of opportunity

Vandalism and window breakages on buses are a major problem in the UK. Stagecoach Manchester has invested in onboard CCTV cameras to deter and identify vandals and has replaced the side glass on some buses with shatter-resistant plastic sheets. The company has worked with local communities and schools to educate people about the costs and dangers of vandalism. In the worst cases, the company has diverted buses away from problem areas. Newport Transport has also installed CCTV cameras to deter window breakages. Sacrificial coatings are used to combat the problem of window etching. JW Glass (Steamy Windows) offers a regional emergency service to replace coach double-glazing. Glass is often bonded into place, so the vehicle needs to remain stationary for several hours to allow the bonding agent to cure. Identification of the correct piece of glass to be used for replacement can also be challenging due to the proliferation of body types. Other companies offering glazing replacement services include Superscreen and Autoglass. (A)
