Platform strategy for automotive electronics development
This article explains how programmable logic devices (PLDs) can provide a common platform for different automotive designs. Unlike application specific standard products (ASSPs), PLDs provide flexibility. Blaupunkt's development time for its Travelpilot Rome automotive navigation system was accelerated by the use of PLDs. The flexibility of PLDs allows automotive designers to rapidly develop new features simply by modifying the device's programming in their design, allowing multiple versions of the same product for different models. The adoption of a platform-based product design strategy allows low-cost innovation, greater product differentiation and risk reduction. Use of field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) increases flexibility and allows automotive manufacturers to continue meeting design requirements.(A)
