Testing automotive serial bus systems

The introduction of advanced control systems in automobiles containing sensors, actuators and electronic control units is placing new demands on in-vehicle communications technology. Flexibility in both bandwidth and system extension will be key attributes. The added complexity of the electronics creates new problems in terms of troubleshooting and debugging. Most data bus problems can be categorised as noise, signal quality, timing and data errors. The addition of serial data bus triggering and protocol analysis into digital oscilloscopes has created a new class of tools for serial bus analysis. The use of instruments that offer simultaneous real-time analysis and the ability to display two different Can bus signals is discussed. Flexray signal analysers for providing physical-layer waveform observation and protocol analysis are described. (A)
