Cell of the century

The new fuel-cell powered Honda FCX is described. The car looks good, will seat four in comfort, has more than adequate performance, will go as far on a tank of hydrogen as most cars will on a tank of petrol, and the only emissions are water. Unlike Honda's previous fuel-cell cars, the FCX is designed to be sold. It will go into production in 2008. Initially is will appear on a limited, leased basis for selected customers in Japan and USA. Honda has not said how much the FCS will cost. The new fuel cell in the FCX weighs 67 kg, uses 52 litres of space and puts out 134 bhp. The top speed will be 60 mph and the range per tank will be 354 miles. The author describes his test drive in the FCX.(A)
