A Code of Practice for developing advance driver assistance systems: Final report on work in the RESPONSE3 project

The European Commission funded project RESPONSE was established with tthe main aim to develop a Code of Practice (CoP) for the design and evaluation of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). Prior to RESPONSE manufacturers had no clear targets to aim for concerning driver interaction behaviour and ergonomic/traffic safety. The Code can now be used by industry through self-commitment, to help ensure safe systems. ADAS systems present new challenges for system safety and the CoP provides a tool for engineers to use when developing and assessing such systems. The Code endeavours to help development of systems that allow full driver controllability and as such are acceptable to both drivers and Authorities. The Code covers all of the stages in the development and testing of ADAS systems. It includes procedures which can be integrated into manufacturers own processes. The CoP aims to help speed up the introduction of safe ADAS systems through providing a robust development process to avoid liability and recall issues with systems when they reach market. This report, whilst written for the UK Department for Transport (DfT), is also designed to help encourage manufacturers and suppliers to adopt the Code of Practice and understand the purpose, scope and potential future use of the Code. The report provides the results of a preliminary informal consultation that was conducted by TRL with European Member States. The report also discussed the key findings of the Public Workshop that took place at the end of the RESPONSE project. When deciding how the RESPONSE CoP should be publicised, used and developed it is important to consider not only the results of the initial consultation and public workshop but also lessons learned from similar guidelines and from the work of the European Commission eSafety Implementation Road Map group. These factors have been explored in the report and used to draw up a list of implementation steps, which are also summarised in the report. (A)
