THE AESTHETIC PRINCIPLES OF HIGHWAY DESIGN

SUI CANONI ESTETICI DI PROGETTAZIONE STRADALE

Examples of American and German highway landscaping are used as examples in a state of the art review. It is pointed out that though landscape requirements are well known to highway designers, they are seldom implemented in the final project. Three basic criteria to be observed at the design stage are identified as follows: landscaping with the highway; the landscape from the highway; and the landscaping of the highway. These criteria should be carefully analysed in terms of the prevailing technical and economic factors, in order to produce a balanced overall design. /TRRL/
