The reality of historic roads
The prime purpose of this paper is to give the physical basis on which roads might be examined in order to determine their worth in contexts beyond their current raisons detre. This physical basis will then provide guidance and even criteria by which a road might be assessed to determine its significance beyond its current role as a transport artery and/or an historic curiosity. The paper also examines the preservation needs of historic roads, particularly in the context of the Burra Charter. It discusses the dichotomy between the current physical state of a road and the many and varied uses and forms which the road will undoubtedly have had over its service life.(a) For the covering entry of this conference, please see ITRD abstract no.
