The Land Transport Management Act: project implementation

The Northern Gateway Alliance, comprising Transit New Zealand, Fulton Hogan, Leighton Contractors, URS New Zealand, Tonkin & Taylor and Boffa Miskell, is responsible for project managing, designing and constructing the Northern Motorway Extension. This 7.5 kilometre motorway from Orewa to Puhoi is governed by the Land Transport Management Act 2003 (LTMA), which is underpinned by sustainability principles and a commitment to social and environmental responsibility. The Northern Gateway Alliance has embraced concepts of sustainability and worked hard to integrate these throughout the project. The Alliance recognises the emergent nature of sustainable development as a driver in infrastructure projects and has aimed to learn from both local and international practice. Specialist skills have been used to build awareness, understanding and commitment to a sustainable approach amongst the project team and in the various functional areas of the project. This paper shares the experience to date by the Alliance team with integrating sustainability principles into the project at a practical level.
