FULL FACE BORING OF ROAD TUNNELS IN CRYSTALLINE ROCKS

FREMTIDSPERSPEKTIVER PAA FULLPROFILBORING AV VEGTUNNELER

Important progress in the field of tunnel boring machines has taken place in the last decade. Studies are under way to assess the advantages of full face boring of road tunnels in crystalline rocks. Information from full face borings at four different sites of special interest to Norwegian rock conditions have been collected and discussed. Under conditions specified, full face boring should be best suited for one-lane road tunnels with a cross sectional area of about 30 M2. Higher construction costs are incurred than in areas with no restrictions on blasting as compared to conventional tunnelling. This should be weighed against improved overall quality, safety, working conditions and finally lower maintenance costs.(a) /TRRL/
