Marvel of 1907: Inauguration of the First Roundabout at Paris' Place de l'Etoile
1907, la geniale invention du premier sens giratoire Place de l'Etoile a Paris
The famed Place de l'Etoile is a large traffic circle surrounding the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, France. Urban planner Eugene Henard reconfigured vehicle flow around the arch at the turn of the twentieth century using his traffic circle regulation system (at one time known as the "Eno System"). He concluded that traffic congestion could be completely avoided as long as all drivers remained on the right hand side of the road. The author discusses theory and practice surrounding the development and operation of the Place de l'Etoile.
