Fuelling Excellence at HKIA
The openness and transparency of the aviation fuel system at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) is the subject of this article. The author discusses how HKIA has pioneered both the design and functionality of an aviation fuel system whose open access philosophy, allowing for fair competition among fuel suppliers, has become an industry model. Also discussed is the open tender franchise process, as established by the Airport Authority Hong Kong, regarding the supply of aviation fuel to the more than 80 airlines operating at HKIA. The airport’s efforts in aviation fuel system management led directly to it receiving a special International Air Transport Association (IATA) Fuel Trade Forum award in October 2004.
