Three forms of concrete bridge surfacing may be distinguished according to their construction and laying methods: monolithic, floated and deck surfacing. The last construction method, a deck surfacing in association with the carriageway slab, has proved itself without exception and has been developed into a faultless construction technique. The most significant advantage of this method lies in the statical contribution of the concrete surfacing. Extensive investigations, carried out by the empa and the consultant engineers - baenziger, elicited the information that the concrete surfacing, in association with the carriageway slab, cooperated fully and safely under repeated stressing with a full working load and also when loaded to failure. In a comprehensive research programme the firm betonstrassen ag of wildegg has investigated a number of bridges built by this system. This established that not only is there very good tensile strength between surfacing and construction concrete but also good protection of the concrete bridge structure itself against salt damage and against corrosion of its reinforcement. It may be presupposed that if the bonding of the concrete surfacing with the carriageway deck is foreseen during the design period, there may be substantial savings in steel and concrete for the bridge itself. For the effective functioning of the bond it is necessary that the combination of surfacing and construction concrete should be complete and this depends to a great extent upon the proper handling of the carriageway slab both before and after the surfacing operation. /TRRL/
