The 2030 Railway

This article describes trends that might affect the shape of the UK railroad system in 2030 and what can be done today to meet the needs of the future. Some trend are clear: the population will shrink and the pool of younger skilled workers will also reduce; the drift of population towards cities will continue; people will live longer and be more prosperous, meaning that they will value their time but be less agile; energy will be more expensive, so transportation systems will need to reduce consumption; and private transportation will develop technology to maintain its attractiveness. The railroad industry must respond to these trends by making trains lighter in order to both reduce journey time and lower energy consumption; using better operating practice and timetabling to achieve a higher capacity railroad; and reengineering railroad stations to turn them into efficient and friendly interchanges. Technological solutions must be found for providing passenger information as well as mechanizing maintenance and monitoring functions.
