DEVELOPMENT OF A CONCRETE SIGN GANTRY

The author describes the development by the north western road construction unit of a concrete sign gantry for use at the M56/M531 interchange. The final design has resulted in a simple, maintenance-free, reinforced concrete structure with ancillary aluminium work. Brief construction details are given of the system which is based on a module of 1.83 M and uses relatively light components. Advantages of the concrete gantry when compared with steel types are described and include lower construction and maintenance costs, higher wind resistance and increased sign capacity. Examples are given of other sites in Cheshire where concrete gantries have been constructed. /TRRL/
