AN APPRAISAL OF STEEL REINFORCEMENT AND PRESTRESSING TENDONS

The author presents a brief treatment of the metallurgical aspects of reinforcing and prestressing steel concerned in particular with how the stated characteristic strengths of reinforcement are achieved. The four major properties of yield or proof stress, ductility, weldability and notch ductility are noted and their inter-relationship discussed. Types of reinforcement examined include hot rolled plain and deformed mild steel bars, hot rolled high yield steel bars, cold worked mild steel bars and hard drawn mild steel wire. Consideration is also given to ferrite grain refinement, micro-alloying elements and prestressing tendons. /TRRL/
