Finding a New Way Forward with Sustainable Development
The Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive (GMPTE) is responsible for public transportation policy and infrastructure in the northern England area around Manchester. This article describes GMPTE's commitment to sustainable development. GMPTE follows four key sustainable development objectives: (1) effective protection of the environment; (2) prudent use of natural resources; (3) social progress which recognizes the needs of all; and (4) maintenance of high and stable levels of economic growth and employment. GMPTE was a founder signatory of the International Union of Public Transport's charter on sustainable development in 2003. The company has taken practical measures to reduce pollution from buses and works closely with local planning authorities to make sure that new development is close to public transportation.
