Transit Market Primed for Growth in Rail Services
This article describes the growing market in railcar refurbishment, as public agencies are beginning to outsource such tasks to improve efficiency and convenience. Some public agencies involved in these types of contracts include the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Area Transit Authority with 364 cars being refurbished and the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority with 238 cars being refurbished. Third party services include a variety of services from car overhaul to general maintenance and operations. As the U.S. fleet of railcars ages, some in the business believe this market could become a multibillion-dollar industry. The article notes that outsourcing maintenance is a standard worldwide, although it is still a less commonly used procedure in the United States. It is also noted that, as with many businesses, demand in this field tends towards expanding services at lower costs.
