A Closer Look at Rail Flaws

This article provides an account of four different rail flaw detecting companies in terms of their products’ efficacy and features. The first system described detects joint problems without need for visual or manual inspection and operates at 50 mph. The system automatically detects the jointures and captures a high-resolution image from which the system determines potential problem areas. The second company described is working on both an improved web platform for its DGPS-equipped systems as well as aiding in a research project to improve Roller Search Unit (RSU) arrays. Another company the article describes has developed a multi-element phased array unit with a carrier trolley. The final company has also introduced a new RSU wheel to improve on earlier models. This company has also focused its efforts on improving its utilization of information technology.
