QR on Course to Move Freight Throughout Australia
This article presents an interview with the CEO of Queensland Rail regarding changes taking place in the Australian freight market. The railroad has a financially solid base derived from a large coal-hauling business. At the same time, on-rail competition has been legally mandated at the Commonwealth level, leading to consolidation in the highly competitive market. The article gives details about how rail carriers were restructured through acquisition and consolidation and describes some of the battles between competitors for access to intermodal facilities and other parts of the network. Queensland Rail subsidiaries are described, along with the management structure of the country’s railway system.
