THE USE OF HELICOPTERS IN RESCUING TRAFFIC ACCIDENT CASUALTIES

EINSATZ VON RETTUNGSHUBSCHRAUBERN BEI VERKEHRSUNFALLVERLETZTEN

During the years 1967-69 trials were undertaken on the use of helicopters in rescuing accident casualties from roads and motorways. From this experience there could no longer be any doubt that helicopters represented an important extension of the rescue service and they have shown themselves to be a valuable aid in the struggle against death by accident on the roads. In a number of cases the rendezvous-system between the emergency doctors vehicle and the helicopter has been practised with great success. By this means the injured bay be carried by helicopter to a special clinic after having received first-aid in the emergency ambulance. Finally it is emphasized that the helicopter does not make the rescue ambulance in any way superfluous and should not be seen as a competitor to the highway-bound rescue service. /TRRL/
