Automatic Identification System
This article discusses the role of the automatic identification system (AIS) in enhancing maritime domain awareness (MDA). The AIS is an international standard for ship-to-ship, ship-to-shore and shore-to-ship communication and was developed primarily as a tool for maritime safety. AIS equipment mounted aboard vessels continuously and autonomously transmits information about the vessel. The real-time information on ship position and identity can help nations monitor activity in sensitive areas. Since detection and identification of vessels is a key component of MDA, the Coast Guard believes that AIS can provide a critical part of the vessel-tracking needs for building MDA. Several projects are in place to gain this capability.
