A STUDY OF THE ECONOMICS OF ROAD VEHICLE LIMITS; PAVEMENTS

This report presents the methodology and models used in the study to determine the effect on pavements of changes in vehicle masses and dimensions. An increase in axle load limits could be expected to increase pavement costs. The components of the pavement sub-system costs are :- (a) an advancement cost associated with the accelerated deterioration of existing pavements and the need to reconstruct these at an earlier date; (b) an additional cost of maintaining existing pavements and shoulders subjected to increased loading until such time as they are strengthened at reconstruction; (C) a strengthening cost at reconstruction; (D) a cost associated with the accelerated deterioration of flush seals. Models to determine each of these costs are presented in this report. /Author/TRRL/
