The standard sets out the safety requirements for all bicycles with the exception of competition and specially built bicycles and those having a wheelbase of less than 640 mm, which the committee classified as toys. Performance tests included in the standard are based on draft regulations prepared by the consumer product safety commission of the United States of America and draft documents prepared by ISO* technical committee 149. These tests have been designed to ensure the strength and durability of individual parts as well as of the bicycle as a whole, and demand high quality throughout and consideration of safety aspects such as stable handling characteristics, an efficient braking system, and effective reflectors to increase a bicycle's visibility when ridden at night. /Author/TRRL/
