THE ORGANISATION OF AIR RESCUE IN THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY

DIE ORGANISATION DER LUFTRETTUNG IN DER BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND

Rescue helicopters are integral parts of the rescue system, and they represent an ideal complement of ground based rescue services together with other means. Due to the permanent staffing of the rescue helicopter with an experienced emergency team, immediate medical attention for the emergency patient is ensured. Transporting emergency patients with rescue helicopters does not present any additional burden; there is no alternative to rescue by helicopter. Rescue helicopters can be used in emergencies of all disciplines, not only for traumatic emergencies. Secondary transport shortens the transport times, and they represent no additional burden for vitally injured patients. In spite of this optimum rescue system which is unique in the world, rescue helicopters are used far too little, even in present times. /TRRL/
