ON THE EARLY OPENING OF CONCRETE CARRIAGEWAYS TO TRAFFIC

ZUR FRUEHZEITIGEN VERKEHRSFREIGABE VON BETONFAHRBAHNDECKEN

Concrete for carriageways is characterised as having very early setting properties, because it can radiate very little heat below and to the sides and therefore builds up heat rapidly. For the testing process it is appropriate to use 20 cm high beams which are allowed to harden in styropor moulds. According to the Austrian specification and regulations for road construction 8.632, 1976 draft edition, traffic may be allowed on as soon as the concrete reaches 70 per cent of the specified 28 day bending tensile strength of 55 kp/sq cm. Concrete containing portland cement 375 and water-cement ratios of about 0.40 which is easy to work with an appropriate plasticizer can usually be given over to traffic on the day following its laying. /TRRL/
