NEW INSIGHTS INTO THE CAPABILITIES OF DRIVERS AND THEIR LIMITS

NEUE ERKENNTNISSE ZUR LEISTUNGSFAEHIGKEIT DES KRAFTFAHRERS UND ZU IHREN GRENZEN

The driving of a vehicle makes demands on responsibility, on the efficiency of the senses, and on the capacity to make judgements during a period when the physical work rate is at a low level. Vision belongs to the most important essential prerequisites. The suggested perception limit of 0.7 is not correct; a visual limit of perception of 1.0 is required. As well as this greater emphasis should be placed on the perceptive powers at dusk, which deteriorate with increasing age. Susceptibility to glare also increases with age. More account should be taken of speed of eye adjustment at night. The paper discusses hearing defects, disorders of balance and the perception of road signs. Special value is placed on automatic responses which are important in many driver actions. The effect of medicines on the driver's capability must be given further consideration. /TRRL/
