An Assessment of Loop Detector and RTMS Performance
This study evaluates the performance of four traffic loop detector sensor models and the Remote Traffic Microwave Sensor (RTMS) through the use of new analytical techniques. The study collected contact closure data from the five detectors and concurrent video data. Each loop sensor was deployed following guidelines from the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) for at least 24 hours across dual loop detectors in each lane of I-80, north of Oakland, California. The research examined various distributions of the individual vehicle actuations from each of the detectors. The data evaluated at multiple resolutions, included the distribution of individual vehicle actuations, manual validation, and trends in conventional aggregated data.
