Improvement of Urban Passenger Transport Ticketing Systems by Deploying Intelligent Transport Systems

In this paper, the author describes the advantages and disadvantages of conventional and intelligent ticketing systems and possible positive outcomes when using Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) solutions. In particular, the author focuses on smart cards, or e-ticketing, instead of conventional paper tickets and magnetic cards. A comparison of ticket types is presented, including a discussion of their validating mechanisms, their advantages and disadvantages, and their compatibility with ITS. The author notes that despite the significant advantages that contactless smart cards have over contact cards, a more effective solution lies with virtual ticketing systems that might be achieved through the introduction of mobile technologies.
